Research in use

Agroforestry has been the central thread since the doctoral work on Alnus nepalensis–large cardamom systems in the Sikkim Himalaya. That research quantified biomass, productivity, energetics, decomposition, nutrient dynamics, soil C–N–P cycling, nitrogen fixation and energy efficiency across age series and altitudinal gradients — an evidence base now three decades deep.

The work since has extended across agroecology, agrobiodiversity, indigenous knowledge, forest ecology, climate adaptation, mountain livelihoods, water security and nature-based solutions, spanning tropical, subtropical, temperate, alpine and trans-Himalayan environments, and combining ecological measurement with community institutions and landscape process.

Its defining feature is integration. Long-term field sites function as living laboratories for how traditionally managed agroecosystems hold food production and sovereignty, agrobiodiversity, soil fertility, carbon storage, nutrient cycling, water regulation, income and climate resilience together rather than in competition. The Dhara Vikas work advanced aquifer-centric approaches to mountain water security; the large cardamom research turned ecological evidence into the technical basis for a state revival programme.

Current directions run towards biodiversity-to-bioeconomy pathways, bioprospecting and benefit sharing, invasive alien species, ecosystem restoration and carbon-conscious agroforestry.

What the record offers the landscape is a basis for deciding its future. Biodiversity governance has given 196 villages a legal instrument over their own genetic resources and traditional knowledge, through People’s Biodiversity Registers and the access and benefit sharing provisions of India’s Biological Diversity Act. Organic agriculture has an evidence base in the technical volume supporting Sikkim’s State Policy on Organic Farming, which set out how a fully organic state sustains ecosystem services and livelihoods together. And along the Teesta, climate risk has been assessed as a single system from 30 m in Bangladesh to 4,500 m in North Sikkim — spring conservation at Chibo–Pashyor, Kalimpong documented as adaptation practice, and the benefit-sharing arrangements of Teesta hydropower measured against what upstream communities actually receive. A through-line

Traditional and indigenous agroforestry practices in the Eastern Himalaya

Agroforestry has been the spine of Dr. Sharma’s research since his doctorate, which examined productivity and nutrient cycling across an age series of Alnus nepalensis–large cardamom systems in the Sikkim Himalaya — published as two companion papers in Annals of Botany, on biomass and productivity and on nutrient dynamics.

The enquiry continued through the biogeochemistry of these systems: soil carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics across a forty-year chronosequence in Pedobiologia, and the energetics and efficiency of nitrogen fixation along altitudinal gradients in Ecological Research. Together they show how a smallholder system built on alder and large cardamom sustains fertility, nutrient cycling and yield with little external input.

Across three decades the work has moved from components to whole systems — from the plot to the landscape — spanning tropical and subtropical foothills through temperate and alpine to the trans-Himalaya, and taking in forest–agriculture interfaces, soil fertility, agrobiodiversity, indigenous knowledge, watershed process, livelihoods and climate adaptation. These are not remnants of traditional agriculture but working laboratories of indigenous agroecosystem management.

That reading aligns with where agroforestry science is going. Agroforestry is increasingly framed — by the FAO among others — as a nature-based solution addressing climate adaptation and mitigation, biodiversity loss, soil degradation and food security at once. Himalayan systems already embody much of what is now promoted as climate-smart and regenerative: carbon is not an added intervention but part of the farm’s productive structure, held in standing biomass, soil organic carbon, perennial cover and litter, with low dependence on synthetic inputs.

The work is applied as well as ecological. After more than 60% of Sikkim’s cardamom plantations became barely productive, the same body of knowledge underpinned the phased fifteen-year replantation strategy, with interim cropping, that Sikkim’s Department of Science and Technology launched in 2023 as Mero Alainchi, Mero Dhan. For researchers

These landscapes offer functioning systems rather than experimental plots. Nutrient cycling, carbon storage, agrobiodiversity, food sovereignty and security, livelihood diversification, local and cash economies, and climate resilience can be studied within a single integrated landscape — with three decades of baseline data, established community institutions and a resident scientist already in place.

Enquiries are welcome from doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, visiting fellows and collaborating institutions. Get in touch →

A second through-line

Agrobiodiversity across the Eastern Himalaya

A second line of enquiry: the cultivated and wild diversity that mountain households depend on, and the farming systems — not gene banks — that maintain it.

Dr. Sharma has documented that diversity in situ: more than 126 cereal landraces (81 rice, 26 maize, 7 millet), 34 pulse and bean cultivars, 18 oilseed cultivars, 33 tuber and root landraces, 132 vegetable species, 38 spice and condiment species and 64 fruit species. Alongside them, more than 200 wild edible species, 119 multipurpose agroforestry trees, 52 crops of high social and cultural value, 69 sacred plant species and some 21 indigenous livestock breeds, distributed across 15–20 distinct field types. Homestead plots on marginal farms make up 40–70 per cent of landholdings and supply 50–80 per cent of household requirements.

Dr. Sharma provided the technical support for Biodiversity Management Committees to establish community seed banks at twenty locations, including Pendam and Lingee, under a Sikkim State Biodiversity Board programme; they hold traditional cereals, pulses and underutilised crops. Millet cultivation has been guided across some seventy Gram Panchayat Units since 2023, and a Krishnabhog paddy line has been conserved in his own fields for about 150 years.

Under India’s Biological Diversity Act, 196 Biodiversity Management Committees and 196 People’s Biodiversity Registers document the genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, with access and benefit sharing capacity building across India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

The synthesis is Agrobiodiversity of the Sikkim Himalaya (2023); the same evidence base underpins the technical volume behind Sikkim’s State Policy on Organic Farming and Sikkim Himalayan agriculture’s candidature as an FAO Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.

Researchers working on seed systems, landrace conservation, biodiversity registers or the economics of traditional crops are welcome here. The seed banks, the registers and the households that maintain them are reachable through established community institutions, and the documentation is in place. Get in touch →
